Killer Heels Are Killers

Last two weeks, we was given an assignment on writing media release.
So this is my media release:

KILLER HEELS ARE KILLERS

A daughter learns that beauty can really be a pain.

High heels can make a woman look good, but they are a hard lesson in disguise. The mother of a student in Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) is currently warded after undergoing a total knee replacement operation. Her doctor said one of the contributing factors leading to this surgery is that she has been wearing high heels since she was young.

Sukinah Hj. Rehduan, 53, underwent the operation last Thursday. The operation lasted for about four hours. Currently she needs to spend four months in extensive physiotherapy. Previously, she had a few treatments and minor operations on her knees before needing to completely replace her knees with metal stems .Her daughter, Siti Nur’ Rahmah, 22, spent her mid-semester break at the hospital looking after her mother. “A daughter's love can heal everything”. Despite her own obsession over high heels, she now avoids wearing high heels to lectures.

“I have more than ten high heels in my collection, but now I just wear them occasionally”, said the daughter, who does not want to repeat her mother’s mistakes.

Osteoarthritis is a common disease among more mature women. It is caused by the degeneration of cartilage in the joint. Loss of the cartilage cushion causes friction between the bones, leading to pain and limitation of joint mobility. In the most serious of cases, such as this one, the patient needs to undergo total knee replacement.

Initial research performed by Dr. Kerrigan and his colleagues at Harvard Medical School and Boston’s Spalding Rehabilitation Hospital revealed that walking in 2-inch-heel shoes increases strain on the parts of the knee that are most vulnerable to osteoarthritis by 23 percent compared to walking barefoot. "All heels are to blame—not just the narrow stilettos," notes Dr. Kerrigan.

Therefore, it is advisable for young women to reduce the wearing of high heels. Apart from taking regular supplements like Omega 3 and calcium, young women should monitor their weight within healthy limits to lessen the burden on their knees.
